Stop Listening to Yourself - Great Advice
I talked to a dear friend last night and I asked her "When your are in dark times how do you get past hearing your own thoughts and start hearing God's thoughts?"
Here's what she said.
We need to overcome our thinking. Satan throws stuff at you. When you have an area of your life where you struggle and give into sin, that is an open door for satan to come in and torment your thoughts.
1. Pray that the Holy Spirit heals you and allow Him to. Start reading the Bible small pieces at a time. Get a short devotional book (a good one is My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers) and read the section for the day.
2. Start living in the now. When the past comes up, focus on the now. What you are doing at the moment, dishes, etc. Stay away from alcohol which keeps you in the past. Be thankful for the now. If you don't focus on the now you will turn the now into the past which is yet more to regret.
3. Pray the Lord's Prayer as a guide. Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
4. Wait and Read the Bible.
That's when you will start to recognize/discern between thoughts and move from desperate to hopeful.
Let me know how this advice has helped you and I'll pass it on. :)
