Teaching My Kids Respect
One thing we have taught our kids is to not touch anything without asking.
Aside from their things of course; I'm referring to anything they can get their hands on!
In our home we have a specific set up so my kids can repect this expectation.
General toys in an area sorted and with some labelled 'ask first'.
'Ask first' ones are like playdough or something with small pieces that could be lost.
Once they are done with one bin of toys they need to clean that one up and before moving on to the next bin. These expectations are also explained to other children who come into our home.
Special toys are in their rooms, which is offlimits to siblings and guests unless my child chooses to invite them into their room to play. When they invite someone, they accept the risk of their special toys being broken.
In someone elses home we pre-taught them to not touch even toys unless they ask or have been directed to play with them. What our kids may think is a toy may be something special to the owner.
This teaches respect for others and their property. Finding out what value someone has placed on their property and upholding that value as your own.
An example of this would be God's creation. 'The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;' Psalm 24:1 We are to find out what value God has placed on His creation and uphold that value by respecting what God owns.
To not touch anything without asking is the same concept.
Blessings as you seek God and parent His little ones.

I like these ideas very much.
ReplyDeleteI like the labeling of certain things, I hadn't thought about that.
Thanks for this. ;)
